<i>Holy, Holy, Holy:</i> Hearing the Voices of Angels

Were Byzantine writings about the intermingling of human and angelic voices within ecclesiastical settings merely reflections mystical theology, or were they actual observations movement sound? Focusing on Thessaloniki, we consider how writers described angels, certain chants in divine services animated celestial beings, where painters represented particularly city’s monastic churches.
